I know for some an iPhone is some kind of status symbol. In my case, I use my iPhone for everything I can. It is a serious tool that boosts my productivity, keeps me organized, and actually saves me money.

Here are three must-have iPhone applications that promise to save you money:

  1. AccuFuel - Every time you fill up your gas tank or get maintenance or repairs on your car, be sure to add the information to AccuFuel. How does this save you money? By using this application, you get an overview of the mileage your car is getting. If it’s slowly losing mpg, then you need to get your car checked out. Go check the tires and be sure they’re inflated to the correct pressure. See if you accidentally left a bag of dog food in the trunk or whatever. In my case, I had a similar program on my Palm PDA once. After an oil change, my next fillup showed that my mileage had abruptly dropped 5 mpg. I took it back to the service station, and after checking, they rather sheepishly informed me that they had forgotten to reconnect an air hose. And one of the nicest features? It costs just 99 cents.
  2. BeejiveIM - Rather than buying (or keeping) your text messaging plan on your phone, get your friends to use this well-designed instant messaging program. No text messaging fees apply. You can even set it to notify you by email if you are offline and someone messages you. Another bonus—it works on many phones besides the iPhone. At $15.99, the price isn’t cheap as applications go, but if you’re paying $5 or more a month for a text messaging package, this will pay for itself quickly.
  3. Grocery iQ - You’ve heard that you should always go to the grocery store with a list, right? Well, this nifty application takes that advice a step farther. You’re able to record which aisles you buy your items in, which means you’ll get in and out of the store in minimum time. The longer you spend in the grocery store, the more likely you’ll spend buying things you didn’t intend to. Shop like a person on a mission—a mission to get only what you’ve listed and get out as fast as possible! I tried several grocery programs before purchasing this one. Some of them had features that really seemed silly (I mean, who needs to take a picture of every item they’ll have in their inventory for the future?) It’s a great basic program and costs just 99 cents.
